Processed or Enhanced
So the gallery has asked me to put something together explaining my photography. People are saying that my work is
photoshopped, enhanced or the sky's are replaced.
I am guessing that when people are saying that they are Photoshopped that they are fake. The sky has color so they are enhanced. Or that the sky is replaced.
I have a confession to make they are Photoshopped. At least the image is processed in a photo editing program named Photoshop.
The first image is the digital negative or RAW image. This would be the equivalent of a negative for film that is used to produce an image in a dark room. The exception is I don't have to use chemicals. I get to do the process digitally and hit reset if I do not like it.
As you can see the sky is not replaced. Not sure why someone would think the sky is replaced. Is it because the land is lit by low level lighting or that there is color in the sky?
The second image is a JPEG that the camera processed. The RAW image was processed and compressed by the computer software within the camera. It is processed and compressed as the software dictates. One reason we like using RAW images to process is all the data is still available. With the compression and processing to a JPEG there is a lot of data lost.
The third picture is one processed in Photoshop. The process is basically a contrast adjustment using curves. No color added or color saturation. The photographer has the ability to make the image as it was seen i person. If it is the color in the sky that seems confusing it is because at night your eyes see in black and white, as opposed to the daytime when we see in color.
The rods are responsible for vision at low light levels (scotopic vision). They do not mediate color vision, and have a low spatial acuity. Cones are active at higher light levels (photopic vision), are capable of color vision and are responsible for high spatial acuity. The camera does not use rods and cones. It is designed to only pick up color. So at night when we look at the sky we do not see all the beautiful things that are happening.
So do we call it enhancing, processing ,photoshopped or fake? I guess there will always be skeptics.
